The Legacy

The stories of the kings, their legendary victories or painful defeats remain in the pages of history. However, sometimes their stories, heroic steps, devotions, and favourite things are forgotten…

"Be chosen - be the first to revive the history"

Fortunately today, there are people and companies who revive the stories which were once lost in the pages of history, they give new life to seemingly forgotten but well-known tales, and bring them to us with great reverence.

“Tika Svanidze Vancko Estate Winery” is exactly this kind of company. Founded in 2020, the company started positioning itself on the market with wine dedicated to the legendary King Erekle II. The company made it possible to revive the history and weave the flavours of the glorious past into King Erekle’s favourite wine.

The amber wine, created exclusively by “Tika Svanidze Vancko Estate Winery” to celebrate the 300th anniversary of King Erekle, is the best blend selected with great care and love. According to legend, this wine was the king’s favourite one, and today it brings us the whim and spirit of victory with great glory.

Here each grain is selected particularly and seems to tell us a different story. Amber dry wine “King’s Favourite” is made by traditional Georgian method from four Georgian grapes: Rkatsiteli; Qisi; Khikhvi and Kakhetian Green. The wine tells the story of Georgia, a country that has always fought for victory at the crossroads of Europe and Asia.

The number of wine units for sale is also symbolic: 300 years – 300 bottles. The anniversary wine is decorated by Erekle II signature, which is represented by the king with a traditional Georgian wine glass. The bottle also reveals the history of wine making and the values that made it so unique.

And yet who is behind this company and brand?

“Tika Svanidze Vancko Estate Winery” was founded by a woman living in emigration, Tika Svanidze Vanko. Her name has been associated with the promotion of Georgia as a country with a unique potential in international tourism for many years. At her initiative, an international company was established in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, which will introduce the glory of the Georgian history to people from different countries with the help of this magic drink from Georgia – the homeland of wine.

The vine & wine story

As the homeland of wine, Georgia is abound in myths and legends about the origin of wine, mystery and power. This is the drink the creation of which has always been treated with great reverence and respect by the Georgian nation.

It is not surprising that we call wine a divine drink in Georgia.

Wine was first introduced in Georgia 8000 years ago. According to one legend, the vine was originally grown in the forest, it was a wild plant and people did not understand its goodness. Once a man brought vine from the forest and planted it in his yard to create some shade. When the grapes ripened, the man tasted and liked them. Then he decided to put the juice in and store it in a pitcher. The grape juice came out so delicious that the man invited everyone to come and taste it. The god of joy and fun gave his own name to it – Ghvino,(or wine).

Respect for wine and vines is reflected in almost all the fields in Georgia, be it culture, architecture or art. There are symbols of vines and wine everywhere. A Georgian cellar deserves some special attention, as it has individual distinguishing features and design in every part of the country. The evidence of the first cellar found in Georgia, a pitcher buried in the ground, which was used to make and store wine, dates back to about III-II century BC. There is even a remarkable myth of the Argonauts, according to which the trees in Georgia were covered with vines and fountains of Georgian wine were made in the great palaces. (III century BC).

It is a well-known fact that Gelati Academy had a special rule of wine production in the X-XI centuries. The oldest cellar is also preserved in the same academy.
Christianity was spread in Georgia by St. Nino from Cappadocia with a vine cross. This cross is also kept in Georgia.

It is worth mentioning that there are about 500 endemic varieties of vines in Georgia, most of which have spread from Georgia to all over the world, although there are also non-endemic varieties too.
Traditions and rules of vine care have been created by Georgian people for centuries. There was a special method of making wine – a pitcher method, which has no analogue in the world. Most of the vineyards are cultivated in the eastern part of Georgia – Kakheti, where the unique methods of growing distinctive white, amber, or red wine are preserved. Wines are made in a slightly different way in the western part of Georgia.

It is important to highlight that during the centuries of enemy invasions, one of the first goals was the destruction of vineyards. However, the Georgian nation still managed to preserve the divine plant and drink.
