The land of wine and glory
Georgia, with its distinctive location at the crossroads of Asia and Europe, has a rich history, with numerous battles and victories, and this is how this land has come to the present days. This is a country with its own, characteristic script, wine-making method, a country that keeps fusion of different cultures and preserves indigenous traditions.
Wine is an essential and leading part of the Georgian culture. It was here, in Georgia, that archaeologists discovered the material related to wine and vine culture, which is 8000 years old. This date is the oldest in the world, which means that wine was distributed from Georgia to the rest of the world already at that time.
So, what makes Georgian wine so unique? What distinguishes it from wines produced in other countries? You may well ask.
This is a traditional, peculiar Georgian method of making wine, which involves ageing it in a pitcher, a clay pot buried in the ground for several months.
“Amber Revolution” – this is the name that white dry wine was given, which, like the technology of making red wine, implies that the fermentation process goes through the skin of the grapes preserved on the grapes after crushing, and gives the wine a rich amber colour.
The Washington Post was talking about wine made with this method, and a renowned orange wine expert and award winning writer Simon Woolf wrote about it in his bestselling book “Amber Revolution”.
Wine is a vessel of victory, which has always been made in Georgia with great reverence and admiration. Numerous legends and myths tell us about its mystical power and charm.
More than 500 varieties of grapes can be found in Georgia alone, which provides unique opportunities to create variations of different tastes.
An important fact is that in 2020, the OIV (International Wine Organization) included amber wine in the list of special wines.
